How do Vertical Form Fill Seal Machines Work?
A vertical form fill seal machine is equipment that can take a roll of packaging material, form it into a bag, fill it with product, and seal it shut, all in seconds. These incredible machines are a staple in many industries, including food, pharmaceutical, and consumer goods, where efficient and hygienic packaging is crucial. But if you have questions regarding how VFFS machines work, keep reading.
- Film Transport & Unwind: Vertical packaging machines use a single sheet of film, called roll stock, which is rolled around a core. This sheet is usually made from polyethene, cellophane, foil, and paper laminates, and it is placed on a spindle at the back of the machine. When the VFFS machine runs, two belts on either side of the forming tube pull the film off the roll, making the process easier and efficient.
- Film Tension: As the film unwinds from the roll, it passes over a dancer's arm at the back of the machine. The dancer arm consists of several rollers. With each film movement, the arm goes up and down to keep the film tight. This tension prevents the movie from drifting side to side while being transported. The steady film ensures accurate and consistent packaging.
- Film Tracking and Positioning: After printing, the film passes under a photo eye that detects registration marks. This keeps the film aligned to cut the right spot. Next, the film travels past the film tracking sensors that detect the edge of the film. Then a signal is generated to move the actuator and cause the carriage to shift, bringing the edge of the film back to its position.
- Bag Filling and Sealing: As the film enters the forming tube, it moves over the collar, and folds around the tube, creating a continuous cylinder with the edges overlapping. A rotary encoder near the collar measures the film’s movement and sends signals to the PLC, ensuring accurate bag length as set on the HMI screen. Vacuum suction helps in gripping the film securely as it is pulled down by the motor-driven belts.
Conclusion
VFFS machines help streamline packaging, reduce labour costs, and increase productivity.
